ASK EM — Finding Good Cover Art

Keyboard with Tips and Tricks Button.

This question comes from a Facebook friend.

How do I get good art that isn’t cookie cutter without breaking the bank?

There are a lot of good options out there. Here are a few ideas and links:

1. If you’ve worked with a publisher, connect with an artist you’ve worked with and ask if he/she does freelance work. They are often available and quite reasonably priced.

2. Find covers you like and ask the authors who the artist is. You might be surprised and find it’s the author! They may be willing to do graphic design for you in trade.

3. There are many artists out there who are not yet well-known. This is actually a benefit. For instance, Bookin It Designs has beautiful stock cover art for reasonable prices that you won’t see everywhere you turn. Here are the links and some pricing:

If you’re savvy with graphics at all, GIMP is a good software and has a free download. http://www.gimp.org/

Thanks for stopping by, and I hope to see some amazing covers!

  1. Great advice. Cover art is so important… it’s what makes people grab your book in the first place. It doesn’t matter whether you have the most amazing story, if people don’t pick up your book – who will ever know?

    Great post!
